Editing

Whether you’ve just completed a first draft or gone through several rounds of revision, I can help you re-see your story with a fresh perspective.

When I receive a story for review, I read it multiple times, with care and attention.

I always start with what’s working beautifully and brilliantly, to show you — look, you did this! you wrote this lovely thing! And then I point out the areas where some dust is obscuring the story, where more polishing is required, where you need to go deeper to really show us the heart of your story.

All that metaphor to say, I look at character development, dialogue, symbol and imagery, theme, and plot, whether there’s enough tension and suspense to keep the reader engaged.

I also offer reading recommendations specific to your writing project. I have experience working with children’s books (picture books and MG novels), short stories, as well as non-fiction essays and books.

Lulu Kaissi

“Hajera’s editing and critiques are exactly what I needed to take my manuscript to the next level. She provided numerous examples and details for consideration, and highlighted areas of strength that left me encouraged and motivated to move my story forward.”

Sumayyah Hussein

“I could tell that Hajera really took the time to think deeply about my story and how it could be better. The manuscript critique was a great big-picture look at what needed work, and the in-line comments on my story helped guide me to make the changes that were needed.”

The Details

After reading your story with a careful and critical eye, I will provide you with a one to two page assessment of your manuscript, outlining areas of strength as well as where more work is needed. You will also receive an edited version of your story with comments and track changes.

Areas of critique include plot and narrative arc, point of view, character development, and language. The assessment will help address specific questions such as: are your characters relatable; do you have enough conflict and tension to drive your story forward; are you staying within your chosen point of view; is your language use consistent with the genre of your story and worldview of your character.

You will also receive specific suggestions and recommendations on how to proceed with revisions.

I will be available via email to answer any follow-up questions within one week of receiving your manuscript critique.

N.B. A manuscript critique does not include detailed line or copy edits. Edits in the manuscript will only be made where appropriate to highlight or illustrate a larger issue in the story.
